Haegum, Traditional Musical Instrument

Haegum is a string instrument of the Korean nation, which has been used since the period of Ancient Korea.

It has a distinctive tone colour peculiar to the Korean nation–gentle and elegant.

Under the wise leadership of Chairman Kim Jong Il for developing traditional musical instruments on a modern basis, the work of remodelling the instruments was given a strong push. As a result, the expressive power of the clear, graceful and soft tones of haegum was further improved.

The two-stringed instrument was remodelled into four-stringed one, thus expanding the range of tones.

Its shape was also reformed into a beautiful and refined one in conformity with the sentimental demands and aesthetic tastes of the Korean people.

Haegum is divided into small-sized, medium-sized and large-sized ones and johaegum.
